Tabletop Blog 5 - Documenting the Borderlands

This week I wanted to give myself space to tune out most things and focus on just one project that is entirely for myself. Sort of a 'week off' or 'holiday' but, well, I'm not sure if it's working. The fact that I'm sharing what I'm working on shows that even time off is content. But that's the cynical view of it, the other view is that making things is actually my meditation. And seeing what others share inspires me, so I try to do the same. Sinking into a project is exactly what I need to 'switch off'. My mind is usually thinking about a thousand different things, which can be good, but unsustainable.

So this week is the culmination of my work on terrain and miniature painting. I'm playing a game called 'Five Leagues from the Borderlands". A solo rpg lite wargame.

So far, I'm loving it! The combat is so much fun and brutal at times, but then most of the game is rolling on tables to generate quests, maps, and more.

That side of things meant I wanted to play the game using a 'journal'. Telling the story from my 'avatar's point of view.

Each campaign turn is a journal entry, telling the tale of arriving in new locations, getting quests, and trying to survive the battles.

I've also drawn up various tokens using MDF circles, a pen, and watercolour. Those have worked a treat. Vary non immersion breaking details.

Normally I try to work very quickly on my projects, but with this one, I'm going slowly. Actually writing it all out in the journal means I'm quickly growing attached to the characters and world in a way I wouldn't normally. And my mind is just moving slower than normal, which is very welcome.

There is part of me that wants to talk about the fact that I wish I could draw better, have better handwriting, and yada yada. But this is just for fun. It just wants to exist, nothing more. I should apply that idea to all the other shit I do.

Alright, that's it for now. Hope you're chilling, speak soon.
